presence is a piece that was commissioned by Joshua Thomson for Euphonium and Piano. It is written in three movements, here, bottling, and pelog. Each movement reflects a reality that Joshua expressed interest in being set to music. The first deals with the struggle to remain present, in the moment when there are other distractions always vying for attention. bottling expresses the feeling of pressure one feels when bottling emotions, instead of working through them. Lastly, pelog pulls from Joshuas Thai heritage using 5 tones that are essential to Southeast Asia music.
